CALLUM'S RACE REVIEW

"It is always disappointing when you come away from a weekend having not realised your potential. I was unlucky in some respects with the electrical failure in the Feature Race having shown strong race pace after pitting on Lap 1 for a new front wing. On Sunday a couple of small errors on the opening lap and a race limited by the number of laps under a safety car made progress difficult.

The weekend started positively with P7 in free practice on my first visit to Baku. In qualifying the switch from medium compound to super soft compound tyres changed the balance of the car and our adjustments did not optimise the performance and we had to settle for P11.

I made a good start in the feature race but at turn 1 I had contact which damaged my front wing so I had to pit. After that, the pace was really strong and although I rejoined at the back, I made good progress through the field aiming for a points finish. Frustratingly, an electrical failure meant the race came to an early end for me and this also compromised my starting position for Sunday.

The sprint race was a crazy race.  I didn’t get the best start and was out of position trying to make my way out of the first two corners, which hindered my progress through the pack. As people fought up ahead I tried to capitalise on the various crashes where I could. In between the safety cars, the race pace was strong, but at the dice at the end, I managed to just get ahead of Galael on the run to the finish line only for him to power his way back past at the line.

The pace was strong this weekend so it is disappointing to leave Baku without any points.  My teammate showed the potential of the team with his podium finish and having out qualified him by more than seven-tenths anything was possible this weekend. We will be back in Barcelona in two weeks determined to build on the positives from this weekend."
